I forgot to check to see if my current one was hardwired.
I could be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that you can easily remove the plug, and voila, just hardwire it. I guess we'll see when I get mine and open up the box. It would make a lot of sense since many locations are hardwired.
I will follow your lead, sir!

Totally. Just like wiring up a lighting fixture.

Yep.. if water has submerged the outlet 36" above the finished floor.. odds are my house has joined the atlantic ocean.

Meanwhile most new construction place their electrical wires underground and their big green transformers/boxes on the ground. So...while your house will be ok, with the box above 3 feet, everything that feeds it, will be comfortably underwater.

Gotta love codes.

Well.. since we're all being very anal in this thread, not really..

Lighting fixtures are usually either hardwired or plug in, since hardwired fixtures are meant to terminate in some box. If the fixture is a plug in you can't really just cut the plug off and run the cable to a receptacle and make it hardwired, at least not easily in compliance with code. Only Romex and in wall cable is approved for behind walls, and lamp cord/regular extension cords run behind walls are against code.

In the case of this disposal, I think you can remove the bottom metal plate (which acts as the box), undo the wire nuts to remove the plug, and wire nut the romex (or bx) connections onto the disposal and replace the metal plate..

Just cut the cord for the lamp, separate the wires and shove them into the outlet. Works for me.
