You know it's going to be good day when you have a split nail, then your try to rub off the piece of split nail with your other thumb and you harpoon yourself.

I have not operated such a thing but I have also been considering renting one. I want to do a long retaining wall in the front of my house and have no desire to dig it all by had. I just have to avoid the pipe for the well.
That sounds like the perfect use for one as well. The issue just becomes how precise you need it and whether you trust yourself. Also, you might need to get in there quick to build the retaining wall shortly after you dig it out, or I'd imagine it'd erode and make a mess. Building a retaining wall if it's substantial is a big project itself..
This will be the weeniest retaining wall in history. I just need it to hold back the stone path that makes up my font walk. The Great Wall of China it is not.

I dono.. I like a challenge personally which is why I do many things myself. I'm still thinking about hiring it out myself, but doing it myself and seeing it all done is much more satisfying to me. Plus, operating a skid steer just seems like a lot of fun. If I'm saving money and getting to play with heavy machinery it seems like a no brainer. We'll see what happens..

The beer I drink after I do the work tastes better than the beer I drink while watching someone else do it! (unless the job is st00pid dangerous or messy then I just laugh while I drink the beer)

I would think about whether I know how to do the job or not, and then get prices before making the decision. I go to work to make my life easier and to spend free time with friends vs sweating in the yard

All this talk about work makes me want to hunt terrorists (outside of work). Anyone up for R6V2 tonight?
