So....
I was at Home Depot yesterday looking at pavers and fire pits. I have decided to take a crack at putting together this one:
They offer "kits" that come with all of the appropriate pavers in the various sizes and the steel ring/insert thingy to make it complete - all as one purchase. For this convenience, they charge you about $600. This is an online only purchase and so you have to arrange delivery. If you need it shipped to your door, that will be an additional $55. You can ship it to the store, however, for free - you are on your own to get it home.
My local store also sells all of the pavers individually. There are three sizes used in this kit (so says the PDF assembly instructions you can download) - Large, Medium and Mini. Large pavers are $3.18. Medium pavers are $2.14. Mini pavers are $0.64.
Let's go back to those instructions again and do a little math...

24 Large's = $76.32
12 Medium's = $25.68
32 Mini's = $20.48
TOTAL = $122.48.
I had some trouble finding the square fire pit insert. I'm not really sure what the thing is for other than it provides a ring, of sorts, that might hold the top layer of pavers together as well as a cooking grill. I dunno... I think it is dumb and wouldn't buy it or use it anyways. Still, the round one I can find is like $70. Lets add that to our total as well as tax.
That makes our total a shade over Two Hundred dollars. Call it $205. This is the EXACT same materials as is sold in the kit. The SAME STUFF.
My question is, then, WTF do you get for your $400? FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS? WOW.
It gets better... Read the reviews! The first one says that the kit is "a great value." WTF? I almost fell for this myself so I can't go around saying people are dumb. I assumed the cost of the individual pavers would be more than the kit cuz, SURELY Home Depot wouldn't try to screw me that bad, would they?

Jeff, I am having the same experience looking at playground kits for Ethan. $400-600 for hardware and building plans. Still need to arrange for lumber. F that.

I can kinda get it with playground kits. Like... The lumber you would buy would need to be cut and pre-drilled, right? There is some value in a "kit" that has all that stuff done. Might even be pre-finished. I would be willing to pay maybe 50-75% more for that.
But this is a 200% markup to save you from a little math and pulling the stones off the shelf. Okay... Math IS hard and I might break a sweat getting the stones to the register. But I can't see myself paying $400 to avoid that.
I don't know why but my mind is totally blown by this. Maybe it shouldn't be?
