really trying to figure out if i should get snowtires/rims for the STi this year. i just don't know how bad winter will be in the baltimore area. its a lot of money if they aren't needed.

Performance winter tires are awesome for dry cold weather as well as traction in the snow. I use them on the Audi but that is because the car came with a set of rims and winter tires. I have replaced the tires once since I got the car 5-6-7 years ago and yeah not cheap and you need a place to store them.

While I bought my wife's ring on credit I'm not sure I would do it these days but that is a personal choice. so I guess

i'm not stranger to snow tires. I'm from upstate ny remember i will only go with dedicated snow tires (blizzaks) as they are definitely best due to the sipes in the snow.

just trying to figure out the money side of things and pondering "out loud" (on the forum/internet)

my car is in the shop still, so i have my deductible to pay, then i have xmas coming up, then i have this ring i'm buying. i know snows will last 5-6 seasons due to the hard rubber compound they have. so it is an investment, but not necessarily one i can make now.

Are there any major hills you need to negotiate in your daily travels? Do you have to be at work no matter what?

Anything deeper than a foot and the STI is probably not going anyway snow tires or not IM). If we get a freak storm (like in 2009/10) wait till the roads are clear.
