Haha that explains what happened to that thread. Personally I'm not dumb enough to get my hopes up, but a discounted OEM top does sound interesting. I think a simple "caveat emptor" would apply for something like this. I'm not about to paypal someone $2k and just be happy with a text message saying "your top will arrive in 10-24 months, I promise."

In reality, if I knew how to do it (like the poster says he does), I would lay the money out up front knowing full well that you'd make your money back 2-3x over.

Assuming you had it. That is a lot of scratch to have just lying around. He is talking about doing 15 to 20 of these, right? That could be as much as $30,000 (using the OP's fuzzy gustimates) to acquire and get them here.

^What he said.

If you base your estimates on reality, guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500 for a top (transporting and packaging to the container isn't free). Last I checked the going rate for a top is $3k or less w/o hardware, so you'd be lucky to even double your money. This isn't factoring in time either.. boats move slowly.

$30k on a guaranteed double is one thing, but there are tons of risks/headaches involved not to mention many people don't have that kind of capital lying around. Then there's the issue that you'd need a place to store them when they arrive at the dock. Transporting and storing 10+ tops isn't a simple or cheap endeavor in itself. Ultimately, there isn't a whole lot of profit to be made when you add up all the hidden costs. It's why I said I'd be interested, but it's not something that you're going to get rich flipping.

For those that own tops, I don't think you have to worry about this oversaturating the market and destroying the price of OEM tops..

Especially when you spent $2k on it (with hardware).

Haha ya.. I think if you're worried about the price of OEM hardtops in the first place, you ought to think about "investing" your money elsewhere.

Ultimately higher prices just mean the "next" person gets f-ed. It's no different than real estate/housing around here. Everyone wants their home price to "go up," but it's just a big pyramid scheme.. /rant It's also like people bitching about the price of the s2k falling. Personally I wish they'd fall to $5k. I'd scoop up 2 more.
