The lights ended up almost completely encased in ice so and ended up staying on the house until March. Of the 15 or so strings we originally purchased, I think we have had 3 failures. I am honestly surprised that any of them work. 
You are probably right... The fact that any of them still work probably has more to do with them being LEDs than the build quality of the wiring harness.
