What? No one recommended NetApp all flash FAS? Disappoint...

Synology is a good choice if you don't want to build it yourself, Matt. As for hard drive choice, go with the Western Digital Red drives. They are designed for NAS.

I'm not sure I buy into this built for NAS stuff.

I do have them in my NAS though.
I won't argue with you too much either.

I look at it this way - the idea makes sense and it works really well on paper. The problem is that there are plenty of people using WD Greens in their NAS's that never have an issue.

It's not an issue until there's a disk fault. You potentially cannot rebuild RAID5/6 from green drives.

Yup. I did a ton of reading on this before I built my FreeNAS over the Summer. The question that, I think, Mark is raising is that it all sounds so nice but there are plenty of people that never have an issue. The question becomes, then, how much do you value your data? Are you building the NAS just to have additional storage or are you actually trying to protect it?

Exactly.

Which was totally appreciated (except by the mouse). It was just not presented... uh... well.

At this point, I don't trust mine for anything other than movies & iTunes music. Stuff that I've bought and can download again. I try to rotate my Time Machine drive every ~2 years. That's the important one.

Home NAS.. I'm thinking of a Synology ds214se http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822108163

I don't really need anything fancy. Just basic backup and local file sharing.
