What? No one recommended NetApp all flash FAS? Disappoint...

Synology is a good choice if you don't want to build it yourself, Matt. As for hard drive choice, go with the Western Digital Red drives. They are designed for NAS.

Home NAS.. I'm thinking of a Synology ds214se http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822108163

I don't really need anything fancy. Just basic backup and local file sharing.

I like Synology, I have a 1511+ and it has been running great going on 2 years now. I don't use anywhere near all the features, mainly storage for my VMs running over iSCSI and file storage.

I'm buying a premade one because I've spent the last two years saying "I should put together a NAS". I don't think I ever actually will.

Thanks for the tips

I'm not sure I buy into this built for NAS stuff.

I do have them in my NAS though.

The only real comment on the appliance I have, Matt, would be that it is only a two disk system. Like you said, you don't want anything fancy but you are really limiting your RAID fault tolerance. I'm not suggesting that dual parity is your solution but I think you can do better.

I won't argue with you too much either.

I look at it this way - the idea makes sense and it works really well on paper. The problem is that there are plenty of people using WD Greens in their NAS's that never have an issue.

Any of them (red, black, blue, purple) can be used in NAS except for the green drives. Their spin-down energy saving firmware is a problem due to the absence of TLER.

It's not an issue until there's a disk fault. You potentially cannot rebuild RAID5/6 from green drives.

This said, I myself am tempting fate with 4x 1TB green drives in RAID5 for 5-6 years. I didn't learn about that stuff until I had already bought them.
