I'm returning this thing, anyway (Netgear WNDR3700). Its signal isn't even as strong as my NEIGHBOR'S wifi, and definitely not as strong as the crappy Actiontec they gave me. WTF?
Strong wifi, so you can share your bandwidth with the crackheads down the street? Weak signal does not leave the premises.
Like the man said - bandwidth. And this stupid Actiontec has problems allowing wired-to-wireless communication (and vice versa). Plus, it allows Verizon to snoop with a well-documented back door that you can't close (tho I've managed to just block entire Verizon IP blocks to get around that).

And my shit is secure. More secure than others, anyway, which would present as softer targets.

Have anymore info on this backdoor and how to close it? The OG FIOS install that I had at my place in Silver Spring actually had ethernet connections to the router so you could use your own. They "fixed" that in the newer installs though.

Apparently you can call and ask them to turn on ethernet, but they might not do it.

The backdoor in question is port 4567 and you can't close it, the firmware won't allow it.

I guess "snoop" is a possibility, but it's meant as a maintenance and troubleshooting port. It requires a secure connection and credentials but that doesn't mean someone else won't get in. If you turn on logging you can see successful connection attempts to determine IP blocks to lock out.

You need the coax connection if you have FiOS TV. I don't. Still, there's a bunch of contact cement (booger glue) in the ethernet port on my ONT.

Yea they used to run both the coax and the ethernet to the router.

well they patched the tire... didn't think you could patch ZR rated tires safely without it leaking. we'll see how the tire holds up and if it leaks... i'll get them to give me a new tire.
