When viewing an image in the gallery, right click on it. Under "view sizes" you should see "direct link to this image file." Right click on that, and "copy link location." Paste that url into [img] tags.
& IT IS NO LONGER SLOW! HA!

grazie! still not as simple as it used to be 
follow-up question, how do I resize it? when I do the above, by default, it seems to paste the largest version of the picture.

So same right click menu on the image, but instead of "direct link to this image file", click on whichever image size you want. That will take you to a page displaying the image in that size. Right click on that image, "copy image location", and paste that into your [img] tag.
