Well if you ever want to kill a few hours here's a nice thread about some crazy guy and his wife's trip by themselves through the Congo. Warning ~60 pages til the end of the story but he tells it well.

I was reading it... Foolish mortals took a Toy where only a Jeep could go. Not that mine would make it.

I'm only on page 3 but it looks like most of the issues they had were with ground clearance. Hummers are actually quite capable in this department because of a unique axle design they use. There is actually a gear reduction at each wheel that permits the axle shafts to be located above the wheel center line. This creates a ton more ground clearance because the diff can also be located above the wheel center line. They are called Portal Axles and are actually pretty cool.
I don't think that the vehicle they took was necessarily a poor choice but they should have used MUCH bigger tires. Something in the 40" range would have made more sense. The only thing I can think of being bad about that would be storing spares and finding parts in the darkest parts of Africa. Toys are almost ubiquitous so parts are more likely to be found in far away places. My guess is that it was a trade off between harder to get parts and a shovel.
If it was me, I'd have taken something full size (suburban, pick-up, International Harvester, etc) on giant tires instead of a mid-size SUV on stockers.
