Steve, you can go into labor and not pop a baby out for HOURS. My mother in law took 32 hours to push Sara out. That medicine makes the baby ready to drop, otherwise negating the long labor process that having a baby can possibly be.

Hospitals are required by law to keep you there for two days, unless there is an issue and you are not medically fit to leave, or if the labor process takes to long. That's why they try to force that medicine onto people, to make the labor portion as quick as possible to get them out of the room for the next person. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
