I'm looking at doing one to run XBMC... Initial feedback is that I was shooting WAY too high with specs initially so now I'm looking at an Athlon II x3 build... If I haven't forgotten anything, it looks like it'll be around $425 complete (already have HDDs and BR-ROM).

edit: also considering an SSD for the system/boot drive. 40G should be big enough.

if you get an original apple tv you can hack it easily to run XBMC or Boxee. i use mine as a HTPC and have had no problems.

I actually run WDTV live boxes, they play all my stuff and stream it over the network, plus they use a lot less power than a HTPC. Have you looked at the boxee box? That does a lot of what XBMC does, and is cheaper than building a HTPC.

Can that play HD stuff? I seem to remember that it wasn't powerful enough to handle HD.

What are you building it for? Google TV just dropped to $99. That can stream your collection of videos... but it doesn't have a BR drive.
Google tv is crap They dropped the price because it sucks so bad.

yup, i don't have any issues with HD video, either from the itunes store or from the net. i watch all of the new BBC Top Gear episodes in 720 with out any issue.

since apple pulled the plug on the original it has become a great little home brew device.

Meh. I bought one. There are mixed reviews... Apparently with the new update (coming next month I think) it's supposed to get significantly better.

I was thinking of boxee too, but google TV can do the same stuff and is now $100 cheaper.

my tv really isn't capable of doing 1080p, it's a few years old, but it can handle 720p with no issues.
