Trying to be at zero owed and returned here. Always err on the side of getting a return. Liz and I used to get 7-8k back every year. But then that is income again, it gets double taxed, and you lose. Get a new tax preparer.

You never have to pay taxes on your fed tax return. Your state is actually a deduction.. so the net effect is 0.

The reason why you try to keep it as 0, is because you're giving the gov a tax free loan... however how much interest can you earn in that 1 year anyway?

govt owed me $100, and i owe state $150. Seems to be just about right.
