So, we just turned on the solar panels last night. Got the net meter down to -5KwH before the sun went down, and this morning we were at +9KwH. So I guess we are doing ok. We should make more than we use in the summer. Use more than we make in the winter. I think replacing the 21 year old HVAC system will help. Also looking to do a tankless hot water heater---eventually.

Why are you trying to heat hot water?
#1734
Because it needs more heat!!

Do they give you a credit for the extra energy? So like if you bg&e bill was $100, and you produce enough to negate that $100 and then produce $20 worth of extra energy, do they give you that money or apply it to your solar panel bill?

If you make more than you use in any month, you pay for that energy from Vivint--and you get a credit for any potential shortfalls for subsequent months. At the end of the year, if you still have credits, you cash them in with BGE at their rate. Remember, the idea here is that you are buying energy from Vivint for cheaper than BGE--but you sell them back at BGE's rate.
