since our HVAC unit is 21 years old, Liz and I have started to get ready for a new system in the near future. Geothermal guy is coming at noon on Wednesday to give us a quote. Geothermal is usually about 20k. But with tax credits, it comes down to about 9k. Typical new HVAC unit is about 5k.

Geothermal usually runs about 1/5 the cost of typical HVAC systems, with gas heat. We don't have gas, so it should be more than that. I'll let you guys know.

Sounds like you have a heat pump (instead of a furnace/AC combo). I think you might want to up the estimate of what it is going to cost to replace it. The estimates we received started at about $8k and went up to nearly twice that.

I am not agreeing with your numbers, but if they are true, geothermal is cheaper.

They were true for us in our situation in Harpers Ferry. We actually ended up paying just shy of $10k because we went with a higher SEER system with more bells, whistles, n'chit.
