Really? that is some BS. I have a pioneer one and the phone works as normal, but play though the car speakers and I can change tracks, adjust volume etc from the head unit, or just do it via the phone. My wife's new mini (which also doesn't have car play) works the same way.

I can't say I am a big fan of on-star, long story but it called the police on me the other day. The Onstar buttons are red, white and blue and don't dim at night, it looks like a cop is behind you. So I used a hold punch with some electrical tape to stick over the buttons. I accidentally pushed the red SOS button, I canceled the call About a hour later my cell phone was ringing with a Texas number, I didn't answer and they didn't leave a message. About 2 hours later 2 Warren County Sheriffs knocked on my door (its about 7:30 at night) No one ever knocks on my door here. I had to show them the car and my license. Its a bad omen when your car (which knows your have been speeding) calls the cops on you...

So the car probably has both 4G (i.e. it's own cell phone) and WiFi (802.11 wireless Ethernet). If you choose not to up the account for the 4G, the car won't be able to "call" anyone but the internal WiFi, I would think, should still work it just won't have an Internet (capital I) connection.
