Does the phone just go "useless" when you connect it? I am thinking of what happens to my iPod when I connect it to the Alpine HU in my S - it shows the Alpine logo on the display and the buttons stop working. The only way you can work it is through the HU.
It would be nice if it would only take over the music functions. Let me run my apps! kthxbye.

Okay... Why not mount the phone on the windshield and run the waze app? I mean... I know this is "anit-carplay" and defeats the point but it would work, right?

Really? that is some BS. I have a pioneer one and the phone works as normal, but play though the car speakers and I can change tracks, adjust volume etc from the head unit, or just do it via the phone. My wife's new mini (which also doesn't have car play) works the same way.
Honestly, that was my old one. The one that is in there now I put in just before the last WTD. It has bluetooth connectivity - just like my truck - so I put the phone in the windshield and use the apps to run my podcasts and waze but use the bluetooth to send the music or whatever to the vehicle's speakers. I haven't tried connecting it with the cable. I have no idea what happens.

It is just an iPod and just music. That HU doesn't work with a phone anyways.

I actually just use the bluetooth in my S too though, it's not like I would be able to hear the better audio fidelity in that car.

ohhh, ok yea the new one probably works just like mine. I assumed you were talking about an iphone before. You should try it with the cable, it would charge and sound better.

Only about 350K, There are some other components needed to make it a complete room system (audio, VTC, control,) . Having it in portrait mode creates some additional challenges.
