Ok.... Pulled bottom end apart completely, and there was no damage to the rod or main bearings... the metal in the oil pan must have been from the previous motor he pulled the pan on. I'm going to go ahead and install it and hope for the best!
Now its off to Honda for some new rod bolts and main bolts... yet more $$
But at least for now it looks like the bottom end really is ok... seeng the bearing material there was a sucky thing, and i'm still not happy about it, but at least it looks like i'll be ok with this motor for now...
