Default S2000 Car Audio Setup and Installer Recommendations

I just bought a 2001 Silver S2000! I'm picking it up this weekend from Orlando and driving it back to Atlanta. The weather is supposed to be great, so I can't wait to put the top down and start my first road trip with my S2000!

All excitement aside, I have a couple of questions concerning the S2's audio. From what I've heard for myself, and from other people, the 2001's stereo is pretty bad. Two 15W Alpine 6.5's? A little underpowered for such an amazing car, I think. I know forum regulars get asked this question all of time, so I'm sorry if it's beginning to get old, but can anyone recommend a good audio set up for the S2? I've done some research here and there, but I'm feeling swamped from all of the options.

I'd like to keep the dash quick controls functional, so I'm probably not going to change out the head unit (cost savings there too), but I'd like to boost the system's power and range, and for less than $1,000.

Right now I have a 200 Watt JBL amp that used to power a 10" Rockford Fosgate sub in my old car, but the box would take up 70% of my trunk space if I installed it that way. I'd like to keep the sub, but I'm not sure where to fit it. I'm definitely going to change out the original 6.5's, but from there I'm lost. I've heard a bit about a behind the seats speaker kit, but I don't know where to begin looking.

Any recommendations for a good, moderately priced system? I'm trying to get the most bang for my buck. Besides, there's always room to upgrade later.

Could anyone recommend a good installer too? So far CarTunes in Sandy Springs and Hifi Buys in Alpharetta have been mentioned.

Thanks for the help.....I can't wait to pick up my car!!

The F20C has the best sound when reached above 6000RPM! I really can't hear what's coming out of the speakers and most of the time don't really care!
Especially on the track, that's music to my ear!

Just joking, I'm not much a Audio guy. Check with Hi-Fi Buys off Alpharetta (Not the one in Duluth) they are better than the one in Duluth. Duluth people did my first S2000 and screwed up and drilled holes in my engine compartment without telling me (and didn't even clean up the chips). Alpharetta Hi-Fi Buys installed Clifford alarm on my second S, and did a superb job!

If you want to keep the dash control, you'll have to do a search on this site for that! Look for "Pinky"(he's not local), he's the guy who modified and sells several head units still works with the left dash control!

Good luck and have fun with your car!

Thanks for the advice 850. It'll definitely come in handy. I didn't know there were any aftermarket head units that would work with the dash control. I'll keep pinky in mind for later. I have to agree though, that engine does sound sweet.

Silver is definitely a great color, but an S2000 of any color, is still an S2000. I'm picking mine up on Friday, and because of it I haven't really accomplished much at work today. My last car was a 3000GT VR-4. A great car, but I can't wait to experience an open air roadster. Especially one that performs like the S2000 does.

I too just bought a silver 2001. I'm planning on installing the sony mp-450x (4 x 50w) with the adapter that keeps the dash controls. For speakers I'm going with Boston pro series 6.5s. The boston speakers are components so you can get the tweeter out of the way of your leg. I've thought about pricing the 2002 door panels, because they actually have the tweeter compartments built into them. May be some Bass in the trunk later on. If anyone already has this equipment or any other ideas comments would be appreciated -

JL offers a product they call the stealth box with a 10" sub that takes up a minimal amount of room in the trunk. You may want to try them.

As far as the door panels go, I have a feeling they'll cost quite a bit of money. I'm probably going to go with the coaxials myself. If you want a more robust sound, I've heard a lot of buzz from a company called Lucid Automotive. Apparently he's been able to create panels that easily install behind the seats. All of the threads I've seen on this say it's pretty awesome.

To save some money I think I'll keep the stock head unit for now, but I'm definitely amping the speakers.

Make sure to give these guys a try. I'm seriously considering it myself.

Lucid Automotive

Hope I could help.

I saw that Modifry had a module for the remote buttons that could be programmed (I think from the head unit remote). He said that he could make the remote buttons do ANY of the radio functions. I thought that was pretty cool. You may want to PM him to find out which module he has.

Thanks Modifry. That's pretty much the plan I was going to go with. I'm not familiar with the bass shakers though. I may just go for adding rear speakers. A lot of people seem to be very happy with Lucid Automotive's rear speaker set up, so I'm thinking about going with that too. Stock HU, amped front 6.5's, and amped back speakers (not sure on the size yet).

I'm not a bass junky, but I do like full lows. I used to have a 3000GT, and I had a 10" in the back. That put out plenty of bass, but it never seemed overpowering. Unfortunately, a custom box or JL's stealth box is looking to be too expensive for now, so I'm hoping the new 6.5 coax's and rear speakers will fill out that lower end enough. Regardless, I'm probalby going to consult with a local car audio installer this weekend before I make any decisions.
