Holy Welded Power Supply Fans, Batman!
The webserver's power supply, in the spirit of the New Year
, chose to weld itself to the shaft and side of the power supply chassis
. Hence the server's thermal sensors kept shutting it down every time it booted. Have replaced power supply, problem resolved. 
I think I added some RAM to the box too whilst I was muckin around.
