Default Five best weekend getaways from Atlanta

Hey guys, I'm trying to put together the five best weekend getaways from Atlanta. Ideally, I'd like to find a fun, out of the way destination, a good "backroads" drive to get there and a different route back. Any scenic stops along the way would also be really helpful (historical sites, fruit picking orchards, whatever). The more specific you can be, the better.

Thanks!

Ok, well you definitely want to see Savannah while you're down here. River Street is well known for it's bars and taverns and the whole town is very historic. No good roads there really since it's mostly flat. It's close to the coast though which is nice.

Scenic drives would definitely have to include hwy 180/60/19 loop just above dahlonega. Here's a link to the drive: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=34.6970...9,0.558929&om=0

Vogel state park is at the north peak of the loop. Also check out the Richard B Russel Scenic highway while you're there. Those are some of the best driving roads in Georgia.

You might want to plan a quick stop in Helen while you're there. It's a bit touristy, but it's fun. It has a german theme to it.

There are also a lot of wineries around that area. A particularly nice one is Frogtown: http://www.frogtownwine.com/

It has a decent lunch menu and a good selection of local wines.

Highlands, NC is also a nice town to go through on the way back. There are a number of routes that go there that are really scenic. Warwoman Rd is a nice twisty drive, but nothing to look at.

Of course there are the regular attractions like Stone Mountain http://www.stonemountainpark.com/

Six Flags: http://www.sixflags.com/parks/overgeorgia/index.asp

Animal Safar if you like Animals: http://www.animalsafari.com/
Our club has been to that one several times. It's really fun. Just be sure to rent their van for $10. DO NOT take your own car through there.

That's all I can think of for now. The Atlanta club is pretty active as well. Check our public events section to see if anything is going on while you're here: http://www.s2katlanta.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3
or our Calendar: http://www.s2katlanta.com/forum/calendar.php

Have fun
