Default Well, that was interesting...

I picked up a nail in my left rear tire over the weekend, and the damage to the tire eventually resulted in an "explosion" while at highway speeds. Luckily, it was the rear, or I'd have been into the Jersey barriers for sure. That would have been bad Juju. Two S2000's, two total losses resulting from problems resulting from nails in the rear tires.

I heard a 'bad' sound reflecting off of the concrete wall right before the tire blew, so I was anticipating a problem of some kind - but not an explosive decompression! Getting the car over to the shoulder was a challenge, especially surrounded by drivers that are not paying attention to anything going on around them. The car got 45 degrees to the lane I was in at one point, and these clowns were still hanging around in my immediate vacinity. You'd think that the explosion (and flying debris) would have been enough to garner the creation of some "space". Apparently not.

Luckily, I was able to get the car over to the shoulder and swap out the tire. I went home immediately to mount up another rim/tire, because I'd rather not "trust" the donut spare. I think that a trip to the other house to get some new tires is in order...

Chilling write-up - reminds me of an experience I had ages ago: like you, I heard & felt 'something' not quite right with the car & had already started to slow down / pull over as the tire blew. I was lucky that the motorway wasn't busy, & I could just ease the car over to the shoulder...

Sounds like a scary moment & a good save - glad you caught it, and avoided trouble .. & oblivious other drivers

The nail in the tire was something that I acquired on my way back from Memphis Motorsports Saturday morning. If Nick had grabbed those tires before I went to Memphis, he'd have been fine. I just would have lost a different tire!

I threw the tire carcass in the back of the truck and now I need to head over to the other house and grab some tires from "inventory". Then I can take a trip to the tire shop for mounting purposes. It will be nice to get the right stuff mounted up everywhere once again. It's been a bit of a hodge podge since the rims got bent by the "off the edge of the road" concrete crater.
