Depends which one and which group you go with. Usually cost of participation can range from $175 to $225 for one day... so the average is about $200. That should include about 4-5 sessions and 15-20 mins per session. For first or second time participants, you want to make sure you have an instructor riding with you which most groups/clubs will provide (mandatory).

Of course you need to factor in the cost of a helmet (purchase or rent), gas, brakes (if needed), tires, inspection (if needed), etc.

PAYELS2K mentioned Redline Time Attack which is planning to return to GIR this Spring but I wouldn't recommend it for first timers. Instruction is extremely limited and since it is a timed event, most insurance companies won't cover your car if you have an off or collision.

Putnam Park looks interesting.

Is there someplace local that I can get a helmet?

Keep in mind MVP requires SA rated helmets. SA being the fire resistant, car racing spec and M being the general motorcycle spec. You may have trouble finding SA helmets at a motorcycle shop.

Try Solo Performance Specialties if you are having trouble. You can order online, but they are also located in St. Louis.

I did not know that. I have a Bieffe(I think) Motorcycle helmet. Is that good enough for autocross?

Yes, you can use any Snell rated helmet for autocross (1990 and later I think...)

Here is a link to official 2008 SCCA Autocross rules:

http://scca.org/documents/Solo%20Rul...lo_Rules_2.pdf

4.3.1 explains the helmet rules. The important bits:
All helmets meeting the current or two immediately preceding Snell Foundation standards (SA, K, or M), or SFI standards 31.1A, 31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A are acceptable.
So M2005 and M2000 helmets should be legal as well as the SA rated ones.
