milo: read "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins. Industrialized slaughterhouses and "meat-farming" not only attribute to more than 33% of our greenhouse emissions, but is extremely inefficient in terms of water and energy needed to create the food versus simply living off the land, i.e. eating the soy and corn that is fed to livestock and other animals.
So, as a rebuttal, slaughterhouses are NOT required, and actually apply to the world hunger epidemic in a polar opposite approach.

we are not living in the victorian or early 20th centruy era here people.
people by nature do not work the ground they own or hunt/gather their own food anymore. we have billions of mouths to feed and an expectation of a high level of quality when it comes to our food. We (me included) are spoiled rotten brats when it comes to our food and how it is when we get it.
less than 150 years ago food was reaching our tables in a semi-rancid state. Even the poorest of our population today obtain daily food that the finest kings and emperors in eras past would never even dream of getting.
The industrial revolution changed the world forever and has caused some of the worst problems we face today along with its many advancements.
How else would we raise, kill and deliver as much meat as we needed to sustain demand. the world is not going to magically turn vegan overnight...and that solution would not be a viable answer anyway since we are Omnivores and depend on fats and proteins to assimilate the vitamins and nutrients we need.
And no, we cant get it all from plants and suppliments....sorry. Take all the vitamins and supplements you want, if you cant proccess them into your body you are not doing anything but making your urine smell funny LOL

if you want meat in a timely fashion and in at least a semi-clean and non-rancid state then slaughterhouses are needed.

The unwated suffering of another for the purpose of SPORT and ENTERTAINMENT is wrong in my opinion (regardless of the species). I despise dog fighting ... regardless of the breed.
Farming is a practice of humans for understood purposes ... regardless of the substance or your choice of reeping a reward from it (animal or vegetable.)
I do understand the interest in keeping the 'suffering' down during the harvesting process from farming. However, the Antelope suffers so much more trama when being hunted by a Lion. So much so that they go into shock as their jugular is torn from their throat while still alive.
There are negative results from eating just about anything nowadays. Breathing is also a risk ... and all of that is not a direct result of the human population and/or dominance (ie polution). So many natural predators ... from alligators and sharks to bacteria and viruses.
Hopefully we will strike a balance with our environment soon ... because i believe we are truly weighing-in negatively on this eco-system we are guests to.
