Default So i think i stripped the oil pan drain bolt

First off...I have the worst luck with cars. Ever. About 2 weeks ago what started as a routine oil change turned into a 2 hour nail biter.

1. Pulled drain plug, drained oil - no issues
2. Pulled oil filter - of course no issues
3. Go to tighten up drain plug again - oh ****ing no it won't tighten

I pull the plug again...there's metal shavings pretty much ingraved into the base of the plug. I tried cleaning it the best I could and tried reinstalling it...yep its ****ed. I DID NOT TURN IN THE WRONG WAY. I honestly don't know how it stripped. I was running out of time because the shop was closing and I needed to get it off the lift. Well, a tube of RTV, 20 minutes, and a prayer later I was back on the road with surprisingly no leaks.

So my oil pan is stripped...what's the best solution here? I've heard everything from a die and tap to a new oversized drain plug. What do you think?

And FYI, as soon as this is fixed and I find time to clean the car, she is for sale. Please buy it.

i'd say try to find a good used oil pan.

I have never been a fan of tap-n-die options because of several things: cost (machine shop), tools (diy), and another opportunity for Murphy's law to play out.

There is usually very little excess material for this process because Honda is always trying to shave weight (for vehicle dynamics and material cost savings). Remember: now the crush washer will also be 'custom' and either you or the next owner will curse this for every oil change.

my 2cents.

Good luck!

$175 for a new pan... it could be worse, a LOT worse.

new or used pan. And I agree about that being worse part... Check your rearview for rapidly spilling oil from time to time.

Yeah, consider a slightly oversized Fumoto valve, retap, and never worry about pulling the plug again.

all good advice. you dont want it to spring a nasty venting leak on the road. By the time you see the oil light come on it will probably be too late.

The Fumoto valves are cool ... one concern about them (and i know the chances are slim) ... but, anything that sticks out like that on the bottom of the car is just another 'target' for the multitudes of foreign objects in our roads today.

Sorry ... but my life is ruled my Murphys Law. I have a hard enough time keeping the stock stuff from being molested on the roads. Just something keep in mind for anyone with the same luck i have.

Oh ... and i can just picture the tech during an oil change putting a wrench on it and taking it off!
