Finding jobs is the most difficult part of going freelance, not the work itself. If I could guarantee steady work, I'd consider it, but with the current state of the industry it could be suicide.

My boss has contacts at Harris, and he graciously offered to send my resume and a letter of recommendation, if I wanted. I'll give it a go, but I'm keeping my options open.

<sigh> This sucks! I have too many things on my plate right now to be worrying about a job search...

Dan, sorry to hear about this. Perhaps you can check into the school districts. Some of the bigger ones (Orange County, Broward County, Hillsborough County, etc) may need someone w/ your computer skills.

In our area, you have so many options.

Harris, Lockheed, DRS Optronics, Dictaphone, Phillips, Grumman, NASA, plus all the smaller firms.

My brother does MIS/programming stuff for Phillips in Melbourne. I can ask him if there are any openings in your field

Only to a degree... even in a "niche" market like DSP, specializations abound. Most companies are looking for comm experience, a specialization I tend to shy away from (the math gives me headaches ). Digital video and audio (MPEG, MP3, etc.) are more my style, as well as just about any embedded micro (ARM, PIC, 68HC11, etc.). You can truly become a jack of all trades, master of none in this business.

Large companies like Harris, Lockheed, etc. tend towards the comm specialization, though Harris does have a couple of imaging DSP positions open that I'll be shooting for. I'll certainly check out any suggestions people have, but I have to be realistic about the market... I may be forced to move (yet again ).
