People, especially the younger crowd, key cars all the time in parking lots just to do it. It's why whenever I am at the mall or any other area where the "kids" tend to hang out, I intentionally park in a heavily noticeable area that's well lit.

people do stupid things. A buddy of mine caught a group of teenagers walking all over his car... That's right walking on his car (2004 Civic Si) Total strangers downtown Orlando at night.
A physical altercation followed.

My car was keyed a few years back...totally had no idea why. I had not been driving like an ass before I parked (rare, I know). There was plenty of parking in the lot and I didn't see anyone waiting for the spot I took...but it was at the front of the lot.
Just random...

a friends bmw z4 got keyed the other week... they had pulled into the parking lot and walked into the store... what they got to see on a video cam was as they were pulling in from one angle they had it appeared cut off someone in an older car who took action and i'm guessing since the video had their plate they paid for their reaction.. but.. my friend.. had no clue why, until they saw the video... didn't make it right.. but there's always that other person's view...
as for kids being vandels... we can thank ourselfs for that...
