speedy and I were discussing ways to make an event go smoother / quicker and I think he and I came up with a pretty good idea.

For the two day events, have the 1st practice day be the day for novices to run. Veterans may run as well, but their times will not count towards anything. This way on the second day, the race will go smoother with only the veterans on the track. We will have far less off courses, and the workers will all know what they are doing.

Plus, novices should only be allowed to run novice class 3 times a year. After that they should run in their class regardless of placement.
