The "proper line" shouldn't even be an argument here. That's like saying the proper line at a track is over the grass and straight to the finish line. In both cases you're taking into account parts of the area that should not be accessible to you. Besides, what's the fun of the dragon if you can't take tight sharp turns. The whole thing that's amazing is that we're pushing the limit going 45-50mph through the whole streatch. Apexing turns outside your lane just takes the fun away.

Not to say that I wouldn't be up for closing the road down in one direction for a day
