Well...this is the LAST weekend of the Dragon Grill being open...so it will start slowing down significantly...also, of course...Old Man Winter is coming. Before it gets too terribly cold...it's best to visit...

McDragon (an annual S2000 gathering) is taking place next weekend. I hope they have a GREAT time with no LEOs to slow 'em down.

The shutdown enforcement was done on a grant from the state of Tennessee. It had to run out sooner or later.

The real question is whether they will get another grant in the spring. From an outsider's perspective, it was probably very effective money spent.

I wonder how much revenue they actually generated though. I also wonder how they could quantify any percieved increase in safety.

I'm not so sure it will be easy to justify another grant for such an action next year.

Perhaps that's just wishfull thinking. At any rate, if all the LEO's are on the Dragon, I'll just be on other roads in the area.

Well, believe it or not, I don't think the THP was interested in revenue, they were just told to ticket everyone doing anything against the book. However, on paper, there was a huge decrease in accidents reported. The THP wasn't counting the drop in traffic, though, as that only affected the businesses which catered to the bike and sports car people who visited the area.

I agree, it'd be tough to justify another grant - at least until mid summer when things pick up again.

The big worry is that North Carolina will double or triple their patrols in the area as a result of THP's pushing traffic away from the dragon.

Well, there's no doubt that ticketing offenders was a high priority (cost offsetting?) but I don't think this was intended to be a profitable venture. Cops on overtime need to write a LOT of tickets to cover their costs.

I am going to agree with Jeff on this one... I don't think the intention was just revenue, but also to send notice to people travelling through there to keep their driving in check.

I'm pretty sure I know one person who DID get pulled over on the Dragon and was given just a warning.

SO, having said that, I think the THP iniative was probably viewed as successful in the minds of Tennessee lawmakers... question is, will they do this again next year.

Oh, and btw, there were plenty of NC troopers out at DBR as well..
