MONSTER ROLL -- Roll 'em all thru The Dragon once!
Please respect that this poll is meant for Wake The Dragon Registrants.
For a number of reasons I'll spell out here momentarily, I suggested to Raul that we all consider a MONSTER ROLL of S2000s on The Dragon when we initially arrive at the base of The Dragon. By that, I mean to suggest no one pulls off...we just keep right on rolling when we arrive...all the way to Deal's Gap [edit...all the way...to the base of FONTANA DAM for pictures!!!]
Why would I make such a suggestion? Well let me run off some thoughts:
Now...the downside/cons (if any really are)...

Why would I make such a suggestion? Well let me run off some thoughts:
- #1 reason...we won't fit all our S2000s in the Gravel Lot at the base of The Dragon with well over 100 paid registrants
- A number of modifieds (yes, I'm one myself ) really have no business dropping off the road at the Gravel Lot any longer . The "drop-over" is becoming rather significant (unless its been raised to grade again).
- Are you kidding? Can you imagine the LOOKS! that we'll receive taking The Dragon on a massive rollout like that?!!
- I'm betting we could work out something cool with Killboy.com to have them live vid/record the entire fly-by (and I can think of a specific chicane or two I'd ask them to hang out at! ). And of course Killboy.com will be present regardless to take stills as the always do .
- No break in the momentum of arriving at The Dragon. I realize there is the desired benefit, once everyone parks in the gravel lot, of us taking pictures. But as I believe Raul maybe planning something for the base of Fontana Dam Saturday that will address that , the Gravel Lot really doesn't offer an imposing picture IMO (<-and yes, that's just my opinion, I realize). But seriously, unless you're willing to climb halfway up the side of the opposing embankment, the shots can be a little to "flat" to appreciate just how many cars are present.
Now...the downside/cons (if any really are)...
- We wouldn't be stopping for the traditional "Be Safe! & Moment of Silence" at the beginning of The Dragon. To that, I say we are all a similarly "captive audience" immediately prior to our departure from the Motel. Raul can gather everyone around once we've lined up, and he can run through his similar points of discussion before we start heading out for The Dragon.
- OMG! 100+ S2000s are NOT going to travelling at a breakneck speed through The Dragon . True...true...and certainly some folks are more spirited than others. But I guess the way I'm looking at this ("glass half full" here folks ) initial pass is "WOW! Look at all those S2000s!!!" Just imagine, and appreciated even better because for that first pass we probably will be driving slowly...all the great shots you'll be able to have your passengers take as we approach switchbacks and such. This could make for a great photo op...yes, at the expense of speed...but great pics WILL be had! . And anyway, there is an entire day of then hitting The Dragon at your own speed.
- What the HELL are we going to do when we try to shoehorn 100+ S2000s at the other end (Deal's Gap) . Well...we won't We'll just continue taking a left at Deal's Gap and head right on through to the base of Fontana dam... WOW!...that would allow us to do Raul's group pic! ...everyone continue all the way down to the dam's base...take pics there...and then folks return [at their own particular pace/groups] back up to/through The Dragon, run their lil' arses off, yada, yada for the rest of the day. Holy crap! That's some "con" huh!?!
- ...you fill in the blank here with what you don't like about this "monster roll" idea...

It had been suggested that instead of forming up in the gravel lot we stop at one of the pullovers/campsites back up 129 along the river. However, I do kind of like the idea of all rolling at once, as long as we do the traditional pre-run instructions and moment of silence before heading out from the hotel.
Based on 107 S2000s, each with a published length of 162.2 inches, bumper to bumper we would stretch just over a quarter of a mile.

Yeah...I'd made the "pull off the lake" suggestion earlier. I mentioned it to Raul & as one thing in the discussion led to another, I got to thinking about us just rolling all the way through The Dragon the first go .

The biggest "con" I can think of... the roll through to the dam and photo op will put our first "run" sometime around 11am. It can get pretty busy by then. For the drivers who don't get time on Friday, they may not get a chance to really drive the Dragon with any pace.
Side question - for those of us who've traditionally met up with the group at the gravel lot... do you see any problem with us just waiting at the lot and catching the tail end on the way to the dam?

Another thought... (just thinking out loud here...not trying to make any "policy"...)...
What if, back at the motel, and after we've had our meeting/silence. What if the lineup was such that the "spirited" drivers were to leave ~ 5 minutes ahead of the rest of the group. They could "get their nut" and wait down at the bottom of Fontana for the rest of us. There'd still be a HUGE presence of S2000s for a Monster Roll. And as I'm seeing the number of newbs increase this go round, I'd just really like everyone to get a chance to inspect what The Dragon has to offer at a [sane] initial pace (<- okay...I let my ultimate motive out of the bag). But seriously...I don't want folks to get hurt or damage their cars...AND...I really think this (being a different approach than past ones) would be a great way to Wake The Dragon.
However......I do get what you're suggesting WSB regarding 11am. That's somewhat true there. Course...I'ma be up there Thursday afternoon good Lord willin'... so I'll get my groove on juuuuuuust fine prior to Saturday

Monster roll to Fontana Nice idea Wingman.
Also, those that want to have more Dragon time can leave the Hotel earlier and make a few runs then wait for eveyone at the gravel pit then take a position in the rear so we can all roll through the Dragon as a huge 100 car snake of S2000's.
I'd love to see that on video.

The only real downside I see is that we're effectively going to tie up the southbound direction, and anyone coming up behind us is going to get pissed. I think we would have to run it at pretty much the speed limit -- 30 mph! It'd be a helluva site, though! I'll volunteer to run a few turns ahead of or behind the pack with a giant "100 car convoy ahead" sign, just so traffic knows what's going on.

Yeah I dont plan on haulin ass through the dragon as I would rather not risk my car and I have never pushed it through a lot of corners.
But I think it would be AWESOME to get a 100+ car rollout to the fontana damn for a group picture to start.
