Default GPS/maps

I was told by returning local guys here in Jax most phones don't work. I'm guessing satellite GPS works but are there any apps you guys use for offline nav usage?

It'll take you some time and I'd suggest working on it as soon as possible, but here's a great link on how to use google maps ios/android app to save maps.

I use Here Maps (by Nokia) for offline navigation. It allows to download maps state-by-state and is available for both Android and iOS

I heard there's a program called OSMand that does just this. You pre download the maps. Haven't tried it out though.

Downloaded the Nokia app. It works good, messing with it now. Downloaded all the state maps in that area.

I just use the Google Maps caching function, which has worked OK so far, but not great.

Going to look into Here Maps soon. Also keep in mind you can always use the wifi at the lodge to update/cache/download something else, in case what you planned on didn't work out. Also, most of the organized drives will get into areas with ample signal at some point, particularly at meal stops where you'd have time to take advantage of it.

I also have a paper map of the area in my car as an emergency backup. I don't think it's moved in 6 years. Hope it hasn't stained the carpet!

The paper map can be picked up in the lobby at Fontana Village or just about any business in the area. I pretty sure its included in your registration package. You can get turned around up in the mountains.
