Yes, the quiet codes are the sub channels.

There are only 14 channels on FRS radios. The subchannels don't add any more channels; they just prevent your radio from receiving any signals that don't have the correct subchannel code.

The problem with that is that, since you can't hear someone else on transmitting on your frequency with a different subchannel, you transmit over them. You've heard what this sounds like...noise, garbage, nothing you (or they) can understand.

I'm also looking at all of the frequencies and wondering how we'll ever get in touch with each other. Coordinating multiple frequencies among a large group of people is a tough thing to do even for trained operators. Check the license tag to know what frequency to use?? Ain't gonna work.

These are UHF radios with a limited range so there just isn't a need for that much frequency coordination. Fact is, even using one frequency for people in their cars and another for around the resort is probably overkill. You just can't hear far enough away for it to become a problem.

At the end of the day, if we all just put our radios on 4.0 and left them there, our convoys to the Dragon would be able to hear each other on the way in and pick up anyone transmitting as they got within a mile of the resort or the Dragon. Folks already on the Dragon would only be able to hear drivers within a short distance. People in the resort _might_ be able to get as far as the cabin of their friends but also might hear them as their coming into the resort after a good days run.

And, _no one_ would miss a hearing anyone because they were on the wrong frequency. That

 

Sub-Channels I think are good though if you are going off in a small group, and or for our communities trying to travel together we know what frequency to go to when we leave the main area to stay in contact.
