Thanks Ray, I was worried that Mark took offense, but I fully understand now.

I should have known, since we are the Mid-A-holers

Should Raul (or any other person who organizes an event have the final say on who attends?
I can't control who shows to the events...like folks have shared here, these are public roads. However, where controls can be placed include dinner and the such...but you'd be amazed at how many folks try to "crash" them.

The best remedy is what we have...lots and lots of folks willing to follwo the steps...register in time, pay and attend. YOUR support helps to deter the leeches that just want to "show up."

My feeling is this...if you want to just "show up," then do just that the very NEXT weekend. If I didn't take the time to register, then how can I justify showing up. Of course, that is ME...and this is also how lots of other folks think. Afterall, we have several LOCAL folks who REGISTER, PAY and ATTEND and they can enjoy these roads anytime they want!

But something about 100+ S2000s and soooooo many great enthusiasts is something worth paying for...the support from all of you helps to create an organized event and ensures we have $$$ to promote and organize future events on the Dragon. Afterall, the 6th annual DragonBall Run is just around the corner in September!

The organizers cannot be asked to control the one who attend. But I think the individuals in each area can either encourage, or discourage, based on local knowledge of the individual. I would like to think that this is an isolated situation that will not repeat itself. But as the cars get older, and cheaper to step into, you will see a change in the character of the owners.

I think that sort of control would be counterproductive - you really would get people there with a chip on their shoulder.
i don't think this would work, either.

A. you might be keeping out otherwise good people, just because they were new owners or new to the site

B. according to quite a few people, this kid would've been "approved" anyway -- people mentioned he was nice, intelligent, went to a good school, etc.

maybe just make a post before future events reminding people what not to do, and that that type of behavior wont be tolerated?

I figured I'd chime in at some point before rumor and speculation get out of hand

The discussion on Saturday was to keep things off the board until we had a better understanding of what exactly happened. I, personally, heard 3 or 4 different stories and was unsure of what exactly happened. At that time, I made the comment that if any thread was started in the Ohio forum about it, I'd lock it down. Obviously, Rich posted a news article that stated factual information, so in hindsight, perhaps it should have been open to discussion.
During the weekend, as word spread about the incident, I was approached by many people who reminded me over and over that it was "One of your guys", or "Way to organize that run". Without clear information on what had transpired, all I could do was explain that I wasn't there so I can't comment. Honestly, I didn't even know he was going to be a part of the group. Would I have stopped him from joining the group? Nope.. I wouldn't have. He was the same person that pulled over on 271N on my way home from WTD '05 when I spun my car in the snowstorm. He also followed me home to make sure I got back safely. I would never have imagined that he would have done what he did last Friday.
For what it is worth, I apologize that I had suggested on Saturday that we keep the topic out of the Ohio Community. This has nothing to do with autonomy, this was following through on multiple requests by members of the Ohio Community.
If anyone has any additional questions about my involvement in this, please feel free to PM me.
Thanks!!!
See you guys at Dragonball Run '06

Well put.

I am pretty sure that someone willing to drive a suspended lisence and run from the cops will not bother to heed a post on the forum that says:

Don't drive on a suspended lisence, and if the cops chase you, pull over.

It's a idea, but I don't think it will prevent this type of thing in the future.

whilst I have to agree with everything that has been mentioned here, I also have to add this point - and please, dont think in anyway I am defending McQuarrie's actions, but...

I dont think throwing a spike strip into 4 lanes of fast moving mid morning traffic was the smartest move on behalf of the officer. The problem wasnt McQuarrie at this point, but the fact the officer couldnt get the strip back in time, making other traffic have to take evasive action.

Sure, the strip wouldnt have been need if McQuarrie hadnt have run from the cops, but I think they could have handled the situation better.

As far as what to do for the future - If you have ever organized an S2000 event you will surprised how hard it is to actually stop people just turning up. If people want to do it - they will. And by going invitation only, will mean that many new faces simply will not get the benefit of enjoying this fantastic event. I have been on the board for over 4 years now and this was my first Dragon - im 99% sure I wouldnt have gotten an invitation to the event if thats the way it was organized.

haha, true. i guess i meant more of a reminding people what happened in the past than general no-no's (which should hopefully be pretty obvious to most people).

how about a wall of shame? ha.

You know guys, I thought of the same thing as I was driving home on Monday. I really didn't want to bring it up, though. I am sure that the safe use of stop sticks has already been discussed by the local law enforcement groups in that area. Oops I forgot, I've quit posting in this thread.
