There's no cellular service on the Dragon or at Fontana Village.

The Village is trying to get something together but don't expect anything for this event.

You can get service down in Robbinsville or up on the Cherahala Skyway.

Some folks with newer phones, especially the "tri-mode" models, are getting calls out nearly anywhere, but especially in the more open areas and overlook.

I wouldn't rely on it though unless you have tested your phone up there and it worked before. Verizon is the nearest carrier, but I think they share towers with other carriers.

On my last trip I had Cingular and had no coverage at all on the Dragon or in the surrounding areas. This time I have a new Treo with Verizon, so we will see. I, however, am not being optimistic. My recommendation is to give out the hotel number and forget the cell phone.

Another alternative is do no answer transfer or call forwarding to the hotel number for just the weekend.

Besides, this is S2000 weekend! Separate from civilization for 2 days!

And in places on the Foothills Parkway.

do you mean tri-band? or tri-mode is correct? i have a 900/1800/1900...but i think the US only uses 850 and 1900....and i'm pretty sure if anything, the 1900 signal will be the weakest.

It could be tri-band, I'm not sure. Ben that works at the store just got one, and he gets signal all through the Gap. It mainly has to be able to go analog, and I guess the newer phones are stronger.

Plan on using a _very_ slow shutter speed for Deiger so it will look like he's going faster than he is!

I had to drive to Robbinsville and drive around looking for a signal. Found it a a BBQ place but I had to stand in the middle of the parking lot to make the call.
