Requiem For A dream
Outstanding movie! But not for the faint hearted. Excellent performances by the cast, especially Ellen Burstyn. Four people with dreams heading for drug induced disasters. The message comes through and at the end you are left speechless.
Unusual and sometimes innovative editing techniques make this movie stand out, but also may make it a little hard to appreciate from the start, but don't give up on it.
Warning! violence, nudity, blood, sexual situations and a couple of disturbing images which will stick with you for a while...

The guy you are talking about is one of my brothers close friends. They went to High School together. He is a brilliant man. Nice guy too. I met up with him at the screening for Pi in LA. Haven't seen him since, but he lives in NY, my bro is still really close with him. His name is Darren Aronofsky. Right now he is working on an original movie called "The Last Man" which he ofcourse wrote and it will star Brad Pitt and other actors from his other films. He also may do a Batman movie(Batman:Year One), which he will also write and direct.
He won Best Director at Sundance for Pi and has been on fire ever since.

I saw both of those flicks. Pi was good and Requiem was good too, even though I felt sick afterward. Make your kids watch Requiem, they'll think twice about drugs.
