FYI:
1. The movie, as scripted, started out like a regular old pirate story. When Jerry Bruckheimer first read it, he was going to turn it down because he thought it was too bland. Then he gave it to a couple of writers he knew to spice things up a bit. They came up with the idea of the pirates being cursed. Jerry like the idea and agreed to do the film with Disney.
2. Jerry wanted to cast someone who you would not normally find casted in a "family" movie--even though the film was just that. He wanted someone not-so-clean-cut, someone not-so-innocent looking. Enter Johnny Depp.
3. Johnny did his research on pirates and found that they looked and acted much like rock stars. So he modeled the main character, Jack Sparrow, after one of his rock star friends. That's why he acted like he was half-stoned, half-drunk throughout the movie.
4. Johnny showed up to the first screening with all of his teeth capped in gold. When he showed it to the Disney people, they thought it was a little too riskee for a Disney film and asked if he could take them off. He got mad and said, "You know me. You know my work. I think this is the perfect look for Jack Sparrow. If you don't like my creative ideas, then let me go." After much compromising, both sides agreed that gold caps will remain but most of them were removed.
5. All throughout the final editting of the movie, Disney execs were always looking over Bruckheimer's shoulders making sure that the movie was clean enough for kids and their parents. They wanted to push for a PG rating but Bruckeimer's people had other plans.
6. Pirates of the Carribbean is the first PG-13 rated movie under the "Disney" name (of course, the company have made R-rated films before but usually under other names such as "Tri-Star Pictures" which is owned by Disney).
