Haven't kept up on the news with The Hobbit. Apparently they are making it a trilogy. it seems that the 1st movie is the 1st half of the book and 2nd movie is the 2nd half but then the 3rd is kind of a bridge between the hobbit and the lord of the rings?
either way, loved LotR and thought the Hobbit was equally as enjoyable. Not really sure where the negative reviews are coming from, are people going in with some sort of outrageous expectations? Having read the book and seen the 1970s animated movie, this one was exactly what i was expecting. it was 2 hours 49 minutes but at no point did i think "wow this is long", as i did in skyfall.
Tone felt a little more lighthearted, a lot more one liners and comedy bits. Obviously the movie is not a 100% retelling of the books events, what movie is...
I dont consider this a spoiler - but i was happy to see them show gandalfs meeting with the white hcouncil. in the book gandalf kind of disappears for a while and apparently he was meeting with the white council, which they do show in the movie, and Christopher Lee appears as Sauruman. I had read he wouldnt be in the hobbit movies due to his age and lack of desire to travel to be in the movie, but he was in it for a few minutes.

Saw it last Friday with the whole kitchen sink (3D HFR IMAX). The special effects looked pushed because of the high frame rate, and the movements of some of the characters' edges looked over-etched: like watching high-speed sports on a high-refresh-rate LCD/LED TV. . . the net effect of all of that did not give me that suspension of reality. The film quality suffered for it, IMHO, along with an ungodly running time.

I read that watching the 3d was not worth it but because it was still shot at 48fps that seeing the 2d version is amazing. Don't plan on seeing it as I am not that big of a LoTR fan, but maybe if I have nothing better to do next week.

Saw the movie in an IMAX theater. I felt that the HFR helped the 3D. Not much coming from me, I hate 3D. Isn't IMAX 3D different than 3D you'd see in a normal theater?
Liked this movie very much. I love the way the movie foreshadows for upcoming movies and eventually LOTR.

i saw it in 2D because i heard some people got motion sickness from HFR 3D. Weird, but i'm not a big LOTR fan and i liked it. Didn't love it, but i enjoyed it. Felt like a natural return to Middle Earth. My fiancée who is a big LOTR fan, actually didn't like it. She felt it was too long and drawn out and didn't think the characters were as good. I thought it was cool to see all the trolls, dwarves and the bit with Gollum was really good. The technological advances they made that allowed them to catch more of Andy Serkis' facial movements was awesome.
but just like LOTR, i enjoyed seeing it once, but can't see myself watching it over and over. maybe a once a year type viewing will be more than enough.
