Default Philadelphia Living Advice

Hello fellow Philadelphians.

I am toying with the possibility of taking a jay-oh-bee in center city. *dum dum dum*

As part of my considerations of leaving the LV (in 3-9 months, ifffffffffff I get an offer), I am looking for Philly living advice. Obviously, if $$ were no object I'd just get a place in the 18th st/Market St area for like 2Gs/month, however unlimited money is a pipe dream

So I was wondering where the best locations to rent are, along with how do you deal with parking, etc. I'm still planning on keeping my place in the LV, while staying in the City to work. Ideally, I'd find a 1BR for around 750 + ~100 in utilities, but it seems that that's unreasonably low for the 15-30th/Market-Walnut st area.

The one caveat of the job is that shifts are a 6am start. Can't be there at 6:05 or 6:10. It's pretty imperative that I'm on site at 6am, but I'm not sure if trains and buses even run that early. Also, I'd like to be in the heart of things as well and minimize my commute if possible.

So...... where are decent places to live? If they are away from center city, hows the early public transport?

Gracias si senors

*chuckles* If I could get a place at 401N Broad, i'd have better friggin internet than all you FioS kids out there! Friggin direct 10GigE to the interwebs! whoo hoo~~~ Actually, realistically, I could probably get about 1Mbit up/down for about $7/Mb.

Plus I don't have to pay for heating or cooling. I could just hang out next to a rack of 1u servers if I get cold and hang out under one of the many 20 ton AC Units around.

There are some OK neighborhoods that you can move into for about 6-700 for rent that are about a 20 min drive from center city. Living downtown is a bit expensive and parking is an absolute nightmare. You can try looking around fox chase area which is around me. There is a train that goes from fox chase to downtown pretty regularly if you want to use public transportation. septa.org has the schedules

Check out the Gayborhood, or Universty of the Arts locations. 1 bed, or Studios should be in the ball park of $700-1000 price range.

Also take a look on CL...

I think it just depends on the trains/buses. It seems like the rails start around 5am, and if I'm close enough, it's possible to take the rail and get to 15th/market station by 5:40 or 5:50am.

Fox/Chase is up by Cheltenham? So it's like the North East side of Philly, right? I suppose that's not bad. Still a bit farther away, but,

If driving
10-12/day to park. which is: 50-60/week which is 200 to 240/month.

If rail/bus
Need a monthly pass for about $78 it seems.

Something to think about....

Yup been looking around Craigslist and stuff. Gayborhood around market and 8th ish money it seems. Art district seems like it's all around 1200-1500... So I'll have to see.

I guess I was looking for more specific leads or people that you may know renting out.

Umm you wont get parking for 90$/M- at best you will find around $220+ You will want to put your car in a lot every night. I cant tell you how many people I have seen get hit and run when parking on the street.

My friend lives in the Gayborhood, and pays $1000/M for a big 1B, I think you can certainly find a spot for much less. There are hundreds of places that meet your request on CL.

Your better off living in the city and getting around by bike.
