As the first black heavyweight champion, Jack Johnson took a lot of abuse in an era vastly different from now. However, his arrogant attitude only exacerbated animosities. This contrasted starkly with the well mannered, refined Gentleman Jim Corbett from whom he took the title, enraging many boxing fans in that decidedly unenlightened time.
