Security levels have nothing to do with the speed of the product. You may just have to upgrade your firmware if it's super old.

My recommended settings if possible are:
Use a non-default SSID.
Turn off SSID broadcasting if possible. (Like putting your network in stealth mode. A user would have to know the name to attach.)
Use 128 bit WEP or 64 bit if 128 bit not availible.
Use MAC address filtering if possible.

Also..not sure if you are aware...but G access points only function at the higher speed if 100% of the clients attached are G too. So in other words...if you connect to a G access point with a B client ALL clients attached will run at B speed. Security all the sudden becomes really important because what happens if your neighbor has a B client and attaches to your G access point? You get screwed!

Oh...I also forgot to mention that is you have a sophisticated enough access point your can tune the radio strength so it won't broadcast as far outside the area you want coverage in. You can also get into specialized antennas and control the broadcast pattern.

Thanks Iuke

Thank Iuke a second time

I have to research some of the tech info.....Not sure the old Airport is upgradeable...I remember someone saying something about the original version and security....it wasnt a speed issue. And our network is small. With the new laptop I had to go G.....only supported internal card (well didnt have to but wanted internal card)

Ahh...I hadn't heard of that yet so I looked it up. Basically it's uses a time stamp of network packet to help with security. Sounds to me like they are using marketing to promote sales. Any hacker that could do that you have a lot more to worry about.

I feel plenty safe with what I wrote above....any hacker who wants to get in will...all you are really doing is discouraging the wanna bes. kinda like locking your car door.

I don't know....if you are going to buy a new access point anyway...why spend twice the amount for a G access point. I'd still buy a newer B unless one of my previous questions fits.

Iuke, you are my hero.

How about a bluetooth hub so I can put all my hardware in the other room?

Great points Iuke!!! thanks.

I need to research if my existing b that is collecting dust (bought the new G for home network anyway) is ok (as safe) and if so...then no expense is the best defense
