The team that has the ball has four downs to gain 10 yards and make a first down, allowing them to keep the ball for another four downs. possibly driving downfield for a touchdown, worth six points and apoint after kick through the uprights. Then that team kicks off to the other team, who attempts to run the ball back and then gets a first down. If a team stalls on a drive for a touchdown, it may attempt to kick a field goal through the uprights, worth three points. (I don't believe I'm doing this.) There are four fifteen minute quarters and a 20 minute halftime pause when the bands come out and perform. A team can run or pass the ball and the other team tackles the ball carrier. A pass interception or a lost fumble results in the other team recovering the ball. Each team has three timeouts per half. If the score is tied in regulation, there is a fairly complicated overtime formula (I'm not going to even try to explain this) that plays out until one team wins. There are penalties assessed for various infractions, usually resulting in yards being stepped off against the team with the ball.

It's kinda like rugby, except football is played by much tougher atheletes.

Don't you mean the other way round?

Rugby players don't wear body armour

Football pads (for shoulders only) and helmets notwithstanding, football players are bigger, stronger, faster, more talanted, and subjected to much more violent high speed collisions.

eh... Notre Dame's program has been on the rocks ever since Holtz left.... I'm a huge ND fan ... at least they beat Michigan and UT this year ... they always have a tough schedule. Looked like they were going to ruin yet another top 25 teams season at the start too.. too bad they sucked it up after the 1st quarter
