How do people get a license to drive when they obviously can not?
that's the problem of the US system where you can get a license without having to take the test in a car with manual transmission. In the UK if you take the test in an auto, you are only allowed to drive an auto .....

Well, to be fair, James, the VAST majority of cars on US roads are autos. I know last time I rented in Europe (happened to be Ireland), nearly all the rentals were sticks.

That's really interesting that they make that distinction in Europe. Smart move, really. But, is there any kind of enforcement of this? Would you actually have to re-take a driver's test in order to be allowed to drive (or register) a manual transmission?

Charlie,

It is unliklely that you would ever get caught, UNLESS you had an accident or were stopped for some other reason .... I was stopped for speeding and they check your license and the car to make sure that your license covers a manual.

If your license doesn't a manual and you have an accident you will find that you are not insured for the damage to your vehicle since you are effectively driving without a license .... so in some ways, yes, they do enforce it .....

Wow!!!! I guess that makes sense, James. So, in order to be qualified to drive a manual, you have to take a road test? If you already have auto qualified, and you've been driving 20 years, they still make you do that?

Just curious, James. Not saying there's anything wrong with that either.

That's right Charlie. They would still make you take a test.

Most people take their tests in a manual right off.
