I think it was similie too, but I always have trouble with the distinction. In any case, it was rather vivid, was it not?

Indeed it was, Chaz. The only easy and memorable way to distinguish a similie from a metaphor is the use of Like or As which is always used in a simile. Although, a metaphor can be difficult to spot in a story.
