The truth is I don't want a credit card....is that so wrong?? Americans are encouraged everyday to get themselves into debt up to their eyeballs....it's just not for me. And probably a really bad idea when I don't even have a job!!

Credit cards can be very bad....

 

Sadly your credit score is a huge factor in your life. You will have a 350 credit score if you have no credit cards. When you and Mitch go to buy a car or a house, you will not get approved, no matter how good his is. It is legal (though questionable ethics) for an employer to check your credit history - if you have none or very bad credit, it may be viewed as a negative for employment; a high credit score is an indicator of responsibility.

When younger people ask about credit, I usually recommend they get 2 credit cards - use one for gas (I'd recommend a card that gives you cash back like the Citi Reward card) and another for some other recurring item (dining out or whatever). Pay them off at the end of the cycle. If you use them correctly you will come out 'ahead' and your credit score will improve. If you're foolish you will get burned on interest payments, as even the really good cards are 9% APR.


And yes, this is all learned the hard way.
