My great grandfather was my mohel.
circumcision started w/ Judaism as a way to show that you're Jewish. cuz G-d said so, and women like it (there is a very strong matriarchial element in Jewish culture). Later it was discovered that it reduced the chance of bacterial infections, so now most babies have it done by the hospital. Circumcision by a mohel is generally recognized as being faster and safer than what the doctors use in hospitals. One quick slice w/ a knife while the baby is held still by loving family members, as opposed to strapping the baby down to a table and letting a doctor go at its genitalia for up to an hour.
