I learned like this...
I got a job at a Chinese food delivery place. THey asked if I could drive standard. "OF COURSE!" I said.
I got in the store provided VW bug (a '70 I think) and got it in gear. With EVERYONE in the store watching I took it down the alley in 1st and around the corner.
THEN I shifted.... Whump whump whump brrrrmmmmm (3rd) WHUMP Whump whump...brrmmmmmm. and so on. WHen I returned from the delivery.... I could drive a standard.
