I have a chance to play in the pit orchestra...
our high school has their famous annual musical and there's always a teacher-picked pit orchestra. i'm a freshman and freshman don't really get a chance unless everyone drops out in their section. well the cello section everyone has dropped out except 1 so the teacher asked me today if i want to play in "the pit". i've always wanted to play in the pit ever since i started music and now i have a chance as a freshman (veryyyy unlikely) to do it. the only thing is that it goes from 6-8pm for 5 days, 5-9 for 5 days, and 1-9pm one day. then 4 hours for 4 days. very time consuming. i probably could do it, but i'm just a freshman, i'll get a chance for sure in the years to come. should i? thanks
cliff notes for wicky and the gang:
i have a chance to play in our high school pit orchestra for "annie get your gun"
not many freshmans get a chance to play, and people are dropping out
so should i or should i not?? explain.

ahhh okay.. Well, when I played sax back in high school, we didn't have an orchestra or anything, just a class, and we would play at school related events like awards presentations and all that stuff.. I played in junior so by the time I was in Gr.11, I felt a lot more comfortable and relaxed playing infront of a large audience.. the experience definitely helps, and it's all fun anyway, so I would say go for it.. you have nothing to lose, unless the practice hinges on your school work too much, then I'd say, academics come first before any other extra curricular activities..

experience definitely helps, i've only been playing 1 and a half years, but being section leader in front of people that have been playing for 5-6+ years.. there are some things you learn via experience that you can't really learn elsewhere.

Some people catch on to playing an instrument really quick, to a point where you could be on par with someone who has played longer than you (it's a possibility).. The oppurtunity will always be there next year, but it would be cool as a freshman to play in an orchestra dominated by seniors I'd assume.

frankly, i don't think i'm as good as my friend's think i am. i can sound good in a small ensemble and i can play hard songs, but i kinda skipped to the harder songs.. played book 1 and book 2, then i tottally skipped to something above my level.. bach suites. i don't know really know all the simple ones that people learn and many people like to listen to (the swan by saint saens for example) but all the songs i do know are pretty hard.
being in a orchestra dominated by seniors would be damn intimidating.
