They say that his Alzheimer's didn't impact his presidency, but I'm not entirely convinced of that.
In any case, I always felt he was a great leader. He was who he seemed to be, at least that's my impression. And that's admirable, for a politician.
I didn't like his "evil empire" crap any more than I like Bush's "axis of evil" nonsense, but he helped usher out the cold war -- for that I endlessly.
In any case, it's sad to see a great leader go out the way he did, but I'm glad the country saw fit to honor him appropriately.

At the time I wasn't convinced he was such a great President, however, I think looking back on it, he did a lot of good for the world as a whole
In fact I think he worked well with Margaret Thatcher as well, creating a strong relationship with the UK.
